Julia Forsbacka
MSc Horticulture
I am a horticulturist with a focus on soil and plant health, specifically plant pathogens that are soil-dwelling. I did my BSc and MSc at the Swedish Agricultural University (SLU), focusing on integrated pest management, microbiology and growing systems.
In the group I work with the project Nepri, aiming to bring a new early detection system for plant pathogens to agriculture, where I am mainly responsible for the lab work and development of methodology. I am driven by understanding the complexity of growing systems and how small actions can lead to big changes in sustainability.
In my free time I hang out with my horse and dog, friends and family. I like cooking food and learning new things (right now I’m learning arabic). I’m a very creative person and can usually be found making drawings that sometimes make their way into my work!
Fun facts about me:
What is your favourite microbe?
I find ciliates very cute but my favourite I’m working with right now must be Rhizocotnia solani. This fungi form very pretty structures to look at, however you would not want this baby in your agricultural fields..
Beach or forest?
Forest! I am a forest-dweller by nature, grown up in the forest and here is where I find peace.
What was your favourite cartoon as a kid and why?
Dexter’s labratory – dreamed of having a big laboratory and do experiments. I have yet to develop as amazing experiments as him tho…
